What is Reiki?Reiki is the Japanese ancient art of spiritually guided energy healing. It is a holistic technique where universal life force energy is transferred through the palms of a Reiki practitioner to the client. This therapy targets the energy centers (Chakras) of the body, to aid in balancing and aligning the bodies flow of energy. When our energy is flowing easily, we find our selves physically healthy, happy, clear-minded, emotionally balanced with good coping ability and connected harmoniously with ourselves, others and spiritually. When this flow is stagnate or blocked, it may lead to lower functioning on all levels; physically, emotionally, mentally or spiritually. Reiki is a safe, relaxing, effective, gentle-touch therapy that allows for self-healing and also compliments other holistic and traditional medical therapies.
Why would someone see a Reiki Practitioner? People use Reiki for relaxation, stress reduction as well as physical and emotional symptom relief in an effort to improve overall health and well-being. Because Reiki works on the entire self – Mind, Body and Spirit – and because it is a universal life force energy, it aids in all types of physical, emotional, mental and spiritual healing and is not specific to to any particular type of disease or condition. It has been found to have positive affects on the autonomic nervous system by showing a decrease in heart rate, respiration and blood pressure. This therapy can bring about a peaceful, deep state of relaxation and help dissolve energy blockages bringing the body into energetic balance. Thus stimulating and helping to strengthen the bodies own ability to heal. Reiki also supports a person receiving traditional medical treatments and increases the efficacy of other types of holistic healing. Regularly applied Reiki treatments (approximately once a month) enhance your ability to respond to unhealthy elements in your environment and helps you to handle stress with more grace and ease. Physical symptoms often indicate more regular reiki sessions are needed. Often times, clients come away with greater self-awareness and clarity. By promoting the harmonious distribution of energy, Reiki is an excellent form of therapy for maintaining good health.

What would a Treatment session look like if someone hasn’t attended before? The client would fill out a general information form and we would have a short discussion about what is concerning them. This helps set a healing intention. After that, the client lies on a massage bed, fully clothed with pillow or bolsters for back support and blanket for comfort. The treatment room is arranged to promote a feeling of relaxation and peace. It is normally quiet with only the addition of soft music and sometimes aroma therapy. This allows the person receiving to focus on themselves and their healing intention, and to take a break from daily stress and tension. It is a whole body treatment that typically begins at the top of the head and ends at the feet. The practitioner gently places her hands, palm down, on or just above the clients body at specific energy locations. Most people find a treatment very relaxing and may experience the energy as sensations such as warmth, tingling, vibrations, pulsing where the practitioner has placed her hands with some people feeling sensations moving through the body. Others may become emotional (emotional block releasing) in the form of crying which is very healthy, and then there are some who will not feel much at all and fall asleep or go into a meditative state. Every person has a different experience and every treatment is different. Reiki is sometimes combined with crystal therapy, essential oils or Integrated Energy Therapy and takes approximately one hour. It is common to experience a deep sense of peace and renewal following a treatment.
How does Reiki work? What is the science underlying the process? We are alive because of life force energy within the body which flows thru our energetic centres, our chakras, and passes directly through to the organs and tissues of the body. Energy also flows around the body in an energy field called the Aura. The free and balanced flow of healthy energy in and around the body is a state of well-being. Energy nourishes the organs and cells of the body supporting their vital functions.
When the flow of energy is disrupted, it causes diminished functioning which may affect all layers of the bodies energy: the physical, the emotional, the mental and the spiritual which could lead to illness. Our energy flow is influenced by positive and negative thoughts or experiences. Some examples which can lead to blocked energy flow are everyday life situations of; Prolonged stress, injury/accidents, surgery, disease, exhaustion, emotional crisis, suppressed feelings, fear, and self-limiting thoughts. Or, childhood traumas of physical or emotional abuse, or having grown up in a dysfunctional or addicted family. Negative experiences/thoughts disrupt the energy which affects tissues or organs of the body and diminish their function which may lead to illness or disease overtime. Reiki releases the negative energy and blockages to facilitate healthy energy flow and allow the body to heal itself. As energy blockages are cleared, the energy flow (life force) which has become restricted are rebalanced.
