Book An Acupuncture appointment todayAcupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine practice that involves inserting thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body, known as acupoints. These points are located along pathways called meridians, which are believed to regulate the flow of energy, or "Qi" (pronounced "chee"). By stimulating these acupoints, acupuncture aims to balance the body's energy, improve health, and alleviate symptoms.
Acupuncture works by stimulating the body’s acupoints, which are believed to be connected to the body's energy flow (Qi). According to traditional Chinese medicine, blockages or imbalances in this energy flow can lead to illness or pain. By inserting needles into specific acupoints, acupuncture is thought to restore balance and promote healing.
From a Western medical perspective, acupuncture is believed to work by stimulating the nervous system, promoting blood circulation, and triggering the release of endorphins and other neurochemicals that help reduce pain and inflammation.
People seek acupuncture for a variety of health concerns, including:
During the first appointment, the practitioner will conduct an assessment by asking about your medical history, lifestyle, and specific health concerns. You may also be asked about your diet, sleep habits, and emotional health. Based on this information, the acupuncturist will determine the best course of treatment, identifying the acupoints to target.
During the treatment, you will lie on a comfortable treatment table, and the acupuncturist will insert thin, sterile needles into specific points on your body. The needles are usually left in place for about 20 to 30 minutes while you relax. Some people feel a slight sensation when the needles are inserted, but acupuncture is generally not painful. After the session, you may feel relaxed and experience an improvement in your symptoms.
Acupuncture is considered a safe and effective treatment when performed by a licensed practitioner. It is generally well-tolerated, with very few side effects. It can be used as a complementary treatment alongside other forms of medicine, or as a stand-alone therapy for certain conditions. While results may vary, many people experience significant improvements in their symptoms after several acupuncture treatments.
